Mary J. Szawan, of Girard, died Thursday, May 18, 2006 at Pleasant Ridge Manor, where she had recently resided. She was born March 12, 1920 in Braddock, Pa., a daughter of the late John and Anna Golena Szawan. Mary had worked at Marx Toy's Company in Girard for 34 years, retiring from there as a machinist and was known as a "track pinner". She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Girard, and enjoyed playing pinochle, loved bowling and was known for her wonderful polish baking of nutrolls, nuthorns and kolachi. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph J. and Bernard J. Szawan. She is survived by her dearest lifelong friend, Rudy Sabol, of Girard; and Rudy's children, John and Susan Sabol, who thought of her in a very special way. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Margaret Szawan; a nephew, Bernard J. Szawan, and his wife, Annette, of Baltimore, Md.; a niece, Barbara Guerrein, and her husband, Gerald, of Richmond, Va.; great nieces, Deborah McNeil, Lori Papa, Marianne Cole and Kimberly Szawan; and also six great-great-nieces and nephews.
